Humility

2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble. (NRSV, Proverbs 11:2)

11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (NIV, Matthew 23:11–12)

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a child, whom he put among them, 3 and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Humility or humbleness is a quality of being courteously respectful of others. It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity. Humility is the quality that lets us go more than halfway to meet the needs and demands of others. Humility as a virtue is a major theme of both the Old and New Testaments. A demeanor of humility is what is needed to live in peace and harmony with all persons as God intends. Humility allows us to see the dignity and worth of all God's people.
